Rise Of The Enterprise “Toys”

image00The enterprise software market has been uncharacteristically turbulent of late. Beyond several hefty funding rounds and well-performing IPOs, the ecosystem has experienced some major consolidation with SAP’s purchase of SuccessFactors and Ariba, Oracle’s acquisition of RightNow and Taleo, and even IBM’s multiple cloud additions. All totaled, we’ve seen more than $10 billion in enterprise cloud consolidation over the past three quarters. But Microsoft’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Yammer is a little different. Not just because it underscores the importance of social in the enterprise and cements Yammer’s rapid rise to more than a billion dollars in value. Rather, it’s different because it signals the severity of the disruption occurring in enterprise software – disruption that will make it very difficult for incumbent vendors to hold on, and disruption that’s coming from entirely new places and in new ways.

RIM Cutting 5,000 Jobs and Pushing Back BB10 in Disastrous Quarter [Rim]

The bad news for RIM: it lost nearly $200 million (adjusted) last quarter. The worse news: it's now letting 5,000 employees go, on top of the 2,000 cuts that had been previously announced. The very worst news: its BB10 operating system—and last hope for relevance—has been pushed back until next year. More »

Project Glass Session shows a day in the life of a mother and daughter

We know you kids out there love you some Project Glass. So, we thought it worth sharing the latest  Google video that has emerged in the shadow of Google I/O.

This one, titled Glass Session, shows a day in the life of Madame and Bebe Gayno, with Madame of course wearing a set/pair of the 'glasses.' It's not quite as impressive as Sergey Brin's skydiving extravaganza, but it does further emphasize one key point. Google Hangouts are going to feature quite prominently. That, and we're likely to see a lot more before the first developers get their hands on these things next year.

You Can't Beat the iPad Just by Losing Money [Google]

The most remarkable thing about Google's Nexus 7 tablet can't be found on its spec sheet. It won't show up in any benchmark, and it has nothing to do with that zippy new operating system. If you want to know the true significance of the Nexus 7, all you need to look at is the price tag. More »

Whither, Hollywood, Wither?

the_player_posterLast week I wrote about television; this week I've been thinking about Hollywood. Not least because a screenwriter with a pretty good track record recently attached himself to my squirrel book1 and is hoping to adapt it into a big animated movie. But it often takes five years or more to go from script to screen, so I can't help wondering--will Hollywood as we know it still be around by then? Internet hero Cory Doctorow doesn't think so. A few years ago he wrote an essay predicting the death of big-budget movies: "The specific, rarefied animal that is the gigantic film spectacle demands a technological reality that has ceased to exist: just enough technology to distribute the films everywhere, but not so much technology that the audience gets to overrule your distribution decisions." So far, perhaps surprisingly, he's been dead wrong. Theater attendance is down 20% in the USA over the last decade, but actual box-office income is flat, thanks to higher ticket prices. Home-entertainment spending--DVDs, rentals, Netflix, etc--is overall down almost 30% in constant dollars since 2005, but that's counteracted by the huge rise in 'foreign' box office over the same period. Hollywood seems to be fighting the Internet to a standstill. But does anyone out there really think that can last?

Alexia’s Headphones: How We Used CrowdTilt’s Group-Funding Platform To Replace Stolen Property

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 9.51.53 AMOn the 25th of June, our dearest Alexia Tsotsis had an incredibly rough day. First, her car was looted by very bad people in San Francisco, who stole her laptop and a pair of excellent Bose headphones that were near and dear to her heart. And as if that wasn't enough, her car then got smashed by someone running a red light, totaling her vehicle and leaving her in quite a bit of pain. When fellow TechCrunch sharks heard the news, we knew we had to do something to help out one of our fearless leaders, and so our very own Ryan Lawler stepped up to the plate with a suggestion to buy some new headphones for Alexia. "Knowing that we can't replace the sentimental value, I was thinking we could maybe (at least) help replace the item that was taken." After a little back and forth, the team settled on an app to help us accomplish the task at hand (we at TC need an app for everything), and that's where CrowdTilt enters the mix.
