If You Want HBO Go, You'll Have to Keep Paying For Cable Forever and Ever [Streaming Video]

A standalone HBO Go service is the holy grail for cordcutters. It means liberation from cable forever. It's never going to happen. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes just told his investors in no uncertain terms that cordcutters don't exist, and that forcing people to pay for cable to get HBO will work. Sadly, he's probably right. Quirky helmet concept gives new meaning to headlight

Quirky helmet light

As a general rule, it's usually never a good look to strap things to your noggin. That said, we're willing to let this particular Quirky-made concept slide for two reasons: it could very well save your motorcycle-loving life and it won't muck up your head gear. The in-development helmet light, which goes by the plain though apt Signal moniker, makes use of an elastic fiber-optic fabric known as Lumigram, thus avoiding the need for messy adhesives and, more importantly, keeping your biker fashion in check. So, how exactly does it help steer you out of harm's way? Well, by communicating wirelessly via RFID, the attachment doubles up on signaling safety, mimicking your ride's real-time responses for brake lights and turn signals. According to its creators, this hide-saving accessory could be "the coolest thing to happen to motorcycles since Easy Rider." We're not sure we (nor Jack Nicholson, for that matter) agree with that, but it should keep your body and bike free from the crush of neighboring wheels.

Would You Buy This iPhone Prototype? [Chatroom]

We've seen plenty of iPhone and iPad prototypes as this legal battle against Samsung unfolds. But most of them were left prototypes for a reason—visually speaking. However, this latest one unearthed by the Verge caught my eye in a different way. More »

Nintendo DSi gets Matte Red and Matte Blue finishes, shrugs off sunshine glare

If glossy handhelds covered in fingerprint mess aren't your thing, then Nintendo's recently-announced matte finish DSi consoles might appeal. The games maker took to Twitter to announce that both the red and blue options could arrive in stores by the end of this week -- presumably with that tempting $100 price tag. However, if you're holding out for some extra-large 3D gaming, there's still a few weeks to go.

Obama vs. Romney go app vs. app on iPhone

Obama vs. Romney go app vs. app on iPhone

The U.S. presidential election is going mobile, with both Democratic President Barak Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney fielding iPhone apps this week to inform their respective bases and, dare we hope, the greater electorate. They're two very different apps from two very different parties and candidates, so let's take a look at them both...

The Democrat's app is Obama for America, and focuses on campaign messaging.

We’re building this campaign from the ground up, and the Obama 2012 app has all the tools you need to join the fight to move the country forward:

The Republican's app is Mitt's VP, and focuses on who'll be chosen as running mate. (And is also available for Android.)

It’s a question everyone’s asking: who will be Mitt Romney’s VP? There’s no telling when that answer might come. But when it does, be the first to find out and access exclusive content with the Mitt’s VP app.

Now I'm Canadian, where we have 238 parties, a non-elected senate, and no direct way to choose the leader of our country (the majority leader runs the place), so I have no candidate in this race. Still, I'm happy to see something as important as a national election embracing technology and mobile, and understanding the importance of reaching out to the type of people who use apps, read iMore and Mobile Nations, and regardless of political leanings, will help shape the future.

So whether you're passionate or pragmatic, you country is getting ready to call on your vote, so here's hoping everyone downloads both apps (and all apps associated with the campaigns), carefully scrutinizes both candidates across the full range of issues, and makes whatever Hobson's choice they ultimately feel is best for them and for America. (Aside from drafting Tim Cook, of course...)

Go get 'em.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

Apple designer takes the witness stand in Samsung case, brings more iPhone / iPad prototypes along

Apple designer takes the witness stand in Samsung case, brings more iPhone iPad prototypes along

Thought you'd seen all of the iPhones (and iPads)-that-never-were? If you did, then you were wrong as Apple industrial designer Christopher Stringer testified as a witness in the case vs. Samsung today, revealing many details about the company's design process. That included more pictures of phone and tablet prototypes being filed as evidence, while he reportedly also brought a few along for show and tell. The Verge has a few galleries of CAD shots and pictures of rejected designs, including more of the lozenge edged types we'd seen before, and iPads complete with a curved grip around the edge. AllThingsD chimes in with a few interesting tidbits from his testimony, including the revelation that Apple designers actually sit around a kitchen table to debate the progress of current projects, and explaining that earlier iPhone prototypes were labeled iPods either because they had not yet decided on a name, or were already trying to obscure iPhone identity from potential leaks. There's more info at the source links, take a careful look at the iThings around you and imagine what might have been.

Audyssey Audio Dock Air Speaker Review

A while back, I reviewed the Audyssey South of Market speaker/dock, which Audyssey has recently renamed the Audyssey Audio Dock. I felt – and still feel – that the addition of Apple’s AirPlay wireless streaming technology would have made that Audio Dock practically perfect. It has only Bluetooth for wireless, and I’m just not a [...]
