Engadget's New York City meetup wrap-up!

Wow. Thank you, New York City! We had a blast at last night's reader meetup, and judging from everyone we spoke to, a Roseland Ballroom packed full of Gotham gadget geeks had a grand 'ole time as well. Twelve lucky readers walked away with a Samsung Galaxy Note II on Sprint and nearly 30 people took home house cleaning bots from the folks at iRobot -- not to mention the Nook tablets, Oakley Airwave goggles and VestGuard UK Ballistic bulletproof case and iPad, to name but a few. We tested readers' tech (and Wu Tang) knowledge and dancing and singing skills.

There were booths from Sprint, Samsung, Garmin, Speck, Dell, Barnes & Noble, MakerBot, iRobot, Oakley and GoGo Inflight, or as attendee Peter M. put it, a "mini-CES meets A Night at the Improv." Relive the magic in the gallery below.

ComScore: Android's US share kept growing in October, Apple passed LG in all cellphones

We've been wondering how much the first full month of iPhone 5 sales would skew US market share in October. The answer is... not much, if you ask ComScore. Android kept growing to 53.6 percent of American smartphones on the back of the Droid RAZR M, Galaxy Note II and other devices, but the iPhone's market share just managed to remain steady at the same 34.3 percent as in September. Apple could mostly be glad that it wasn't in the position of its older rivals: the BlackBerry dipped below 8 percent share, while the wait for a Windows Phone 8 turnaround may have triggered a sharp drop in Microsoft's stake to 3.2 percent.

There was a symbolic (if anticipated) changing of the guard for the wider American market, however. After months of closing in, Apple just barely edged out LG to become the second-largest cellphone maker of any kind on the US stage at 17.8 percent. A familiar scenario elsewhere kept Samsung once again on top at 26.3 percent, while Motorola and HTC remained on a downward slide. We'll be keeping a close eye on how the November results alter the status quo -- between Windows Phone, LG's Optimus G and a cavalcade of multi-device launches, there's been potential for more than one tidal shift in the mobile world in the past few weeks.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rollout for Droid RAZR HD, RAZR Maxx HD to begin next week

If this is the new Motorola, then we have to say we're fast becoming fans. Hot on the heels of the Droid RAZR M's recent Jelly Bean update, comes word that Android 4.1 will indeed be rolling out to the Droid RAZR HD and RAZR Maxx HD in December. Announced as an update on Verizon's site, the OTA is said to arrive "in phases starting next week," bringing with it the eerily prescient Google Now and ISIS compatibility. So, until then, you can hold off from manually (and obsessively) refreshing that system update setting.

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?

Kongregate breaks free of the browser, serves up downloadable games

Kongregate has stepped out of its web browser boundaries by offering free-to-play downloadable desktop games alongside its existing catalog of browser-based titles. Only Super Monday Night Combat, Smashmuck Champions and Bomb Buddies are available for desktop play, but the outfit is set to beef up its selection in the following weeks. It's not likely that this development will cause Steam to nervously eye its rearview mirror for a competitor on its coattails, but it's interesting to see GameStop's F2P game venture ever so slightly dip its toes into Valve's territory. However, Gabe Newell's platform may yet have some fiercer competition in the brick-and-mortar retailer's Impulse storefront. Ready to stock up on the gratis Windows games? Intuit GoPayment comes to the UK, renames itself Intuit Pay

In a bid to catch mobile payment rival Square napping, Intuit GoPayment is leaping across the pond to begin an assault on the UK. It's certainly putting the effort in, having had to rework its hardware to be compatible with Chip-and-Pin and being forced, for legal reasons, to drop the "Go" and "ment" parts of its name. The service is currently in a limited trial before being rolled out to switched-on stallholders and itinerant fraudsters (we kid) nationwide.
